Far Cry New Dawn Release Date & Pre-Order Guide: Prices, Bonuses

$

0

Set to launch February 15, Far Cry New Dawn is both a post-apocalyptic reskin of and sequel to Far Cry 5 that introduces a new story, allies, and weapons. You won't have to shell out the typical $60 USD to grab this brand-new game, though, as New Dawn has a $40 price point. The game launches on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

The canonical ending of Far Cry 5 saw nukes dropping from the sky, wiping out nearly all life in Hope County, Montana. But that wasn't the end of the story, not by a long-shot. Jumping 17 years later, Far Cry New Dawn sees the remnants of Hope County try to rebuild society, only to come into conflict with a pair of power-hungry twins and their bloodthirsty army of outlaws.

In our Far Cry New Dawn review, Edmond Tran gave the game a 6/10, writing, "There's a lot of potential in the ideas seeded in New Dawn, but there isn't enough room for many of them to breathe and feel fully realized. Not the post-apocalyptic theme, not the RPG mechanics, not the weapons, vehicles, plot, or characters. Advancing through the adventure is an enjoyable experience, especially once you get your superhuman powers, but this is largely because Far Cry 5's combat and progression models remain compelling enough to propel you forward. For its part, New Dawn is a palatable but unremarkable spin-off that feels like it could have achieved so much more."

If you're looking to lock in your pre-order for Far Cry New Dawn, you'll probably want to know what comes in the game's two different editions, where you can buy them, and how much each costs. We've compiled all that information below.

Metro Exodus Release Date & Pre-Order Guide: Prices, Bonuses

$

Set to launch February 15, Metro Exodus continues Artyom and his allies' stories after the events of Metro: Last Light. The game is releasing on Xbox One, PS4, and PC--with the PC version launching exclusively on the Epic Games Store.

Like its predecessors, Exodus is a single-player first-person shooter set in Russia during a post-apocalyptic future that's been ravaged by both nuclear fallout and mutant monsters. Those that survived did so by hiding in the country's metro stations. Unlike the last two games, Exodus mostly ditches the cramped, underground setting for one on Russia's surface. The game isn't completely open world, though. Instead, it's a series of connected open spaces. Survival still proves challenging in Exodus, as you'll encounter mutants and antagonistic survivors, and need to scavenge for materials to keep your weapons and equipment working.

In our Metro Exodus review, Michael Higham gave the game an 8/10, writing, "At first glance, Metro Exodus gives you that wide-open, free, and dangerous world unbound by tunnels, though the scope of its tale focuses on what drives you personally and the lengths you're willing to go to protect what matters most. The open sandboxes may not be strongest addition, but the game still embraces the sense of vulnerability and post-apocalyptic terror alongside impactful weapons used in refined combat and stealth scenarios. You may miss the mystery and intrigue of the previous games, but Exodus puts together a charismatic crew of friends and family that you'll want to follow to the ends of the earth."

If you're ready to pre-order Metro Exodus, you might be wondering which of its two editions to buy, where you can find them, and what pre-order you can expect for buying the game early. We've outlined all that information below.

Metro Exodus Pre-Order Bonus

For Metro Exodus, each platform gets its own unique pre-order bonus. If you pre-order the game for PS4, you'll get a dynamic Metro Exodus theme for your console. Xbox One pre-orders come with a free code for Metro 2033 Redux. Lastly, PC pre-orders come with a digital artbook and the Metro Exodus soundtrack.

The standard edition just comes with the game and the applicable pre-order bonus.

Apex Legends: Review, Tips, Patch Notes, Gameplay, And What To Know

$

Apex Legends is shaping up to be one of the biggest battle royale games around. It only released early last week and already has amassed quite the following. Of course, if you've yet to play the game, you're probably curious what the hubbub is all about. Lucky for you, we've detailed below all the essential information you need to know, which includes our full review, how the game's microtransactions work, guides, and much more.

What are your thoughts about Apex Legends? Do you think it has what it takes to compete against Fortnite? Let us know in the comments below. Otherwise, be sure to check back often as we update this feature with even more features and guides.

What is Apex Legends?

Apex Legends is a battle royale game that's focused more on teamwork than its competitors. It pits 20 teams of three players against each other on one huge map. Like other games in the genre, you and your squad enter with no weapons or items and must scavenge everything you need to be the last team standing.

The biggest difference between Apex Legends and others battle royale games is its focus on character roles, which it calls Legends. Currently, there are eight Legends, each with their own unique special abilities and ultimate abilities that charge up over time. As a team, you're challenged to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your Legend, as well as know how to best use their abilities alongside others to affect your strategy. You can find out more in our breakdown of each character and their respective abilities.

Another unique mechanic comes in the form of the Ping system. With one dedicated button, you can "ping" locations, objects, and other players, drawing attention to them on your teammates' screens. The system is robust, making it possible to communicate effectively without ever talking to your squad, which is a handy feature for matches where not everyone has a headset.

Review

"Apex Legends is a mix of smart shooter ideas that makes for a competitive, team-based game that gets at all the best parts of battle royale while addressing a lot of the weaknesses. Respawn's intense focus on team play makes Apex more than just a worthy addition to the genre; it's an indicator of where battle royale should go in the future," GameSpot editor Phil Hornshaw writes. Read the full review.

While the game is a great time, Phil did take issue with the how the game's wins should be a lot cooler--so much so, that he wrote an whole feature about it.

Biggest News

The week since the launch of Apex Legends has yielded a ton of big news. Below you can get caught up on the latest details about the game.

Latest Patch Notes

Speaking of Apex Legends constantly evolving, you can get the specifics on just what's changing about the game in its latest patch notes. The current patch adds the new Valentine's Day event, balance changes, bug fixes, and more.

How Do Microtransactions Work?

Like other free-to-play games, Apex Legends has microtransactions. The game has three different types of currency: Apex Coins, Legend Tokens, and Crafting Metals. Apex Coins are the only currency that can be purchased with real money, and they're used to buy Apex Packs, Legends, and featured items. You can purchase Apex Coins in the following increments:

  • 1,000 Apex Coins - $10 / £8
  • 2,000 (+ 150 Bonus) Apex Coins - $20 / £16
  • 4,000 (+350 Bonus) Apex Coins - $40 / £32
  • 6,000 (+750 Bonus) Apex Coins - $60 / £48
  • 10,000 (+1500 Bonus) Apex Coins - $100 / £80

For more details on the game's microtransactions, check out our full explainer.

How the Battle Pass Works

No Caption Provided

Much like Fortnite, Apex Legends has a Battle Pass, and it works much like the one in Epic's battle royale game. The first Battle Pass launches in March and will be active for a full season, which lasts about three months. You can refer to the roadmap visual above for more details on subsequent confirmed seasons. However, Respawn has not announced their exact start dates.

Legendary Skins

Apex Legends offers a fair number of ways to customize your appearance via skins for your characters and weapons, poses, and banners. If we're going off our experiences spent playing Overwatch, the most desirable items are likely the Legendary skins. We've rounded up all the ones available now in our comprehensive skins feature; in addition, you can refer to the video above for a taste of what's available across skins, weapons, banners, and more.

Guides

Playing a new battle royale game is going to come with its own share of growing pains. If you're struggling to come up on top, we've got several guides you can refer to. Below we've included links to our beginner's guide and guns guide. If you're looking for more tips, be sure to check out our guide roundup.

Get Red Dead 2 For $40 On PS4 And Xbox One Right Now (US)

One of the finest releases of last year--GameSpot's pick for Game of the Year--was Red Dead Redemption 2. While some of the big fall releases saw discounts during Black Friday, we've yet to see much in the way of notable deals on Rockstar's open-world game. If you've held out until now, you're in luck, as the game is 33% off at two different retailers in the United States.

Alongside GameStop's standard lineup of weekly deals, it's dropped the price of Red Dead 2 to $40 on both PS4 and Xbox One. Amazon, as it often does, has since price-matched that offer, letting you pick it up for the same price on either platform. We don't know exactly how long the discounts will run for, so you should act fast if you're interested by heading over to Amazon or GameStop.

No matter where you buy it, you can look forward to a huge open-world experience and a compelling narrative that you might not expect. Its world is vast and filled with an impressive level of attention to detail. You can read all about it in our Red Dead 2 review.

In addition to the single-player campaign, you'll receive access to Red Dead Online, the game's online multiplayer component. Although we were not as fond of it at release as we were the campaign, Rockstar has been updating it, and just recently it announced plans for some new changes and additions coming soon. Red Dead Online remains in beta for the time being.

New Rainbow Six Siege Y4S1 Update Revealed; Patch Notes Listed

Ubisoft has announced the changes scheduled to go live in Rainbow Six: Siege with the Y4S1 patch. The changes will first go live in Siege's test server on PC, where Ubisoft will monitor player feedback and make any necessary adjustments before pushing the update on all systems.

Most of the changes coming in the Y4S1 patch are buffs and nerfs for Operators. In terms of buffs, the area of effect on Capitao's bolts is being increased to make him more ideal for denying other Operators. For nerfs, the damage for Lesion's Gu mines is being reduced, Clash is losing the muzzle brake for her machine pistol, Dokkaebi's phone calls are being made shorter, the time it takes for Maverick to switch between his SURI torch and a weapon is being increased, and Ash is losing the ACOG sight for her R4-C.

The patch will also address breaching charges as well, which Ubisoft wants--as stated in a blog post--to be "safer and more comfortable" for Attackers to use. The charges are still rather dangerous for Defenders on the other side of the wall though. Although no changes are scheduled at this time, Ubisoft is also considering reworks for how shield-wielding Operators work, as well as buffs for Lion and Glaz and a nerf for Blitz.

We've outlined the changes scheduled for the Rainbow Six: Siege Y4S1 patch below. Siege is available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Nickelodeon Is Resurrecting All That And Spinning Off Spongebob Squarepants

The '90s are back! All That, the Nickelodeon sketch comedy show that launched the career of longtime Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson, is making a comeback at the network. And this time, Thompson is helping the spearhead the revival.

The news comes from Variety, which reports that a new take on the show is in the works with a fresh cast. However, it's expected that some former cast members will appear in one way or another on the new All That. What's more, Thompson has signed on as an executive producer on the project.

"It means everything to me," the actor explained. "It was my first job that I ever had. It gave me an opportunity."

He's not kidding. Not only did All That put Thompson on TV weekly, but he also starred in the Kenan & Kel spin-off with Kel Mitchell, Additionally, the two turned one of the show's sketches into the feature-length Good Burger movie. Of course, he also landed roles in the Mighty Ducks franchise and a long list of other shows and films, which eventually brought him to SNL. Now he's hoping lightning will strike twice, creating a new generation of sketch comedians.

"We think there's a great opportunity to find the next pool of stars," Nickelodeon president Brian Robins said. "We want to bring the show back in a real fun way. This summer, we are going to bring back a lot of the original cast and the cast through the years, and let them introduce the new cast of All That to the world."

All That isn't the only Nick show seeing new life on the network, though. As it celebrates its 20th anniversary, Spongebob Squarepants is planning a spin-off. While no details about who the spin-off would follow have been announced, Robbins sees the potential in expanding the franchise. "That's our Marvel universe," he explained to Variety. "You have this amazing show that’s run for almost twenty years."

We're already afraid of what Spongebob's version of Infinity War will be like.

Resident Evil 2 Remake's DLC Ghost Survivors Drops Tomorrow

$

Capcom has announced that The Ghost Survivors DLC for the remake of Resident Evil 2 is coming out February 15. The expansion is free and will be available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Much like The 4th Survivor mode, The Ghost Survivors focuses on other characters you never interacted with in Leon and Claire's adventure throughout Raccoon City's police station. However, unlike the fourth survivor, Umbrella Security Services agent Hunk, these three additional characters are not meant to make it through the zombie outbreak. In fact, some met their demise prior to the events of the game, as you can discover their fate in Resident Evil 2's campaign.

The first story, titled No Time To Mourn, focuses on Robert Kendo. Robert is the owner of Gun Shop Kendo, who sets out with a small arsenal to brave Raccoon City's streets--which are filled with a new type of poisonous zombie--in search of a means of escape. The second story, Runaway, follows Katherine Warren. The daughter of Raccoon City's mayor, Katherine must sneak her way to safety, all while avoiding or fighting a strangely mutated zombie that can only be stopped with special ammunition. The third story, Forgotten Soldier, follows Ghost. Like Hunk, Ghost is a U.S.S. agent that also survived the initial outbreak and is now trying to escape.

Each story can be tackled on a regular difficulty, or an easier training mode. In a blog post, Capcom social media specialist Kellen Haney described each story as a "what if" scenario, providing "an alternate look at what things might have been like." So The Ghost Survivors isn't canon to the established lore of Resident Evil like The 4th Survivor is.

In our Resident Evil 2 review, Alessandro Fillari gave the game a 9/10, writing, "Resident Evil 2 is not only a stellar remake of the original, but it's also simply a strong horror game that delivers anxiety-inducing and grotesque situations, topping some of the series' finest entries. But above all, the remake is an impressive game for the fact that it goes all-in on the pure survival horror experience, confidently embracing its horrifying tone and rarely letting up until the story's conclusion. Though Resident Evil 2 has its roots firmly in the past, it reworks the familiar horrors into something that feels brand new and all its own."

Mortal Kombat 11 Adds Jade To Its Roster Of Fighters

NetherRealm Studios has confirmed Jade is returning to the fight in Mortal Kombat 11. A new gameplay trailer for Jade dropped during the developer's Kombat Kast live stream on February 14. You can watch it above.

Jade's Mortal Kombat 11 trailer reveals her moveset now allows her to set up combos a little more easily in comparison to Mortal Kombat 9, and her new Crushing Blow and gruesome Fatality are proof she hasn't lost her edge. She sports a new outfit in Mortal Kombat 11, but it's still Jade's staple green. The ninja also hasn't lost her touch when it comes to delivering quips either.

Here's how NetherRealm's official announcement describes her MK11 incarnation: "Now resurrected by an evil sorcerer, she serves the Netherrealm as an undead Revenant. Death hasn’t slowed Jade down, though. She still thrashes her enemies with her bo staff, razorrang, and patronizing put-downs.'

Jade has been a part of the franchise since appearing as an unplayable character in the series' second entry, making her official debut in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. She last appeared in Mortal Kombat 9. Jade is a fairly fast fighter who's good at space control and pushing opponents back, able to use her staff and daggers to dish out damage from a slight distance as well.

Other fighters confirmed for Mortal Kombat 11 include Kabal, D'Vorah, Kano, and several other franchise veterans. Scooby Doo's Shaggy, NetherRealm confirms, is not coming to Mortal Kombat 11 though. We've seen several cool skins for these characters as well, which are collected in a gallery.

During Mortal Kombat 11's gameplay debut, director Ed Boon revealed in-game customization options. Each character has three pieces of gear that you can change, and there are more general makeover options as well. For example, Scorpion can switch up which katana he uses, as well as his mask and spear. A fighter's abilities can be customized as well.

Mortal Kombat 11 is scheduled to release for Xbox One, PS4, Switch, and PC on April 23. The game will have a beta test beforehand though--currently scheduled for March and only for Xbox and PS4--if you want to try it out before pre-ordering.

The New Pirates Of The Caribbean Movie Loses Deadpool Writers

The Pirates of the Caribbean reboot has hit some choppy water, as writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have reportedly jumped ship. Sources told Deadline that Reese and Wernick, who wrote Deadpool 1 and 2, have left the Disney project.

Disney film boss Sean Bailey originally said Reese and Wernick were planning to "make Pirates punk rock again" and give the series the "kick in the pants" it needed to revitalize itself.

There is no word on why Reese and Wernick bailed from the new Pirates movie. Sources told Deadline that Disney is not sure of what will happen next. Some said Disney is already searching for new writers, while other claimed the movie and the franchise overall is now on hold.

The latest instalment was 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which, while not the most successful entry in the series, made more than $790 million worldwide. All together, the five Pirates movies have made more than $4.5 billion worldwide to date. The franchise is also a merchandise juggernaut; Deadline said Pirates merchandise has generated $2.5 billion.

The new Pirates movie, if it ever gets made, may not feature the franchise's biggest star: Johnny Depp. The actor played Captain Jack Sparrow in all of the movies so far, but a report from 2017 claimed that the new movie might be made without him.

As for Reese and Wernick, their first big hit was Zombieland, and they are coming back to write the sequel, Double Tap, which arrives in theatres later this year. Reese and Wernick also wrote G.I. Joe Retaliation, starring The Rock, before entering a new stratosphere of success with Deadpool and its sequel.

Get An Xbox One X With Free Fallout 76 For $400 Right Now In US

Microsoft is offering a nice deal on one of the Xbox One X bundles right now. The Fallout 76 Xbox One X bundle, which normally sells for $500 USD, is now going for $400 USD.

Two versions of the bundle are available, including the Robot White and standard black editions. Both come with a 1 TB Xbox One X system, as well as a copy of the game and one-month trials for Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold. Shipping is free through the Microsoft Store website.

This deal appears to only be available in the United States. Retailer Amazon is also offering the Fallout 76 Xbox One X bundle for $400 USD, so that's another option to consider.

Fallout 76 launched in October behind a lukewarm critical reception. Even if you're not interested in the game, getting the Xbox One X for $400 USD is a fantastic deal on its own.

The timing of the deal is also notable, given that the latest Microsoft first-party game, Crackdown 3, is launching this week. It's free for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, so you can use the one-month trial to play the game without spending extra. You might want to try before buying anyway, as our first reactions in our Crackdown 3 review were not all that positive.

Another deal to consider is at Newegg; the store is offering the Fallout 76 Xbox One X bundle for only $350 USD right now--but the deal is ending soon.

Marking a first for the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, a video game-themed float will make its way down Oxford Street as part of the annual celebration.

Square Enix announced today that it has collaborated with the Sydney Gaymers group to bring a Final Fantasy XIV Online float to the parade this year. The float is described as "unique and exciting," and it's themed around the title "Realms United."

"It means so much to receive direct support, validation, and acknowledgement from such a force in the industry," Sydney Gaymers organizer Peak Distapan said in a statement. "Not only that, to be supported by a game where so much of our community and values are represented.

"The Final Fantasy XIV Online community does not discriminate and respects everyone's freedom and their individual values equally. For many LGBTQI+ people, online communities provide a space for the journey and exploration of personal identities They allow us to connect, and celebrate, and they reinforce that we are not alone."

Final Fantasy XIV Online producer and director Naoki Yoshida said the float at the Mardi Gras parade builds on the relationship Square Enix fostered with Sydney Gaymers at PAX Australia.

"To see it makes me very happy indeed, both as the person in charge of FFXIV and also as just another player of the game," Yoshida said. "FFXIV is another world that continues to grow and expand online. In that world people become adventurers, known as the Warriors of Light, and can continue to be free."

The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras parade takes place on Saturday, March 2. The parade is truly massive, taking over a significant part of the city and drawing crowds of thousands. Last year, Cher appeared in the parade and put on a show after.

No images of the Final Fantasy XIV Online float for the Mardi Gras parade have been released, but keep checking back with GameSpot for more.

In other news, the game's next big expansion, Shadowbringers, launches in July.

Apex Legends Lifeline Guide: How To Be The Best Combat Medic

$

0

Most of the rules in Apex Legends are similar to other battle royale games, but the big difference between Respawn's entry and other titles is its cast of characters. Each character handles a little differently thanks to their differing abilities--some are best at offense, some specialize in defense, and some excel at supporting teammates. Deciding which character to play as and knowing how best to they can aid your team is an essential part of the game.

When it comes to Lifeline, Apex Legends' combat medic, it's all about playing smart and helping your teammates. Lifeline has some of the best support abilities in the game, but lacks any offensive options. She's great to have on a team, but when playing as her, you'll need to be smart about using her abilities to the fullest.

Keep reading for all the information you need on Lifeline's abilities, including their strengths and weaknesses, as well as tips on how to use her effectively and help your team to victory. We've also got plenty more guides, including things that Apex Legends doesn't tell you`, a list of myths we've tested about how the game works, and a full rundown of the game's best guns. You might also want to check out our Apex Legends review while you're at it.

General Overview

Lifeline is the only medic of the current crop of Apex Legends characters, and as such, you'll see her on a lot of teams. Her healing abilities can be indispensable in times of crisis, making it a little easier to revive downed teammates and get them back up to fighting strength in the middle of a firefight. Her slate of support abilities mean she foregoes some offensive strengths, though--unlike other characters, she has no good means of attacking other players.

Playing Lifeline well is all about working with your team and staying together. She's best kept close to other players but away from the front lines to lessen the chances that she'll get knocked down, so that when other players need help, she can assist them. She also lacks abilities that can help her escape in emergencies--she has nothing like the grapples, smoke, and shields that other characters can use. When you're playing Lifeline, you need to be smart and protect yourself so that you can protect your teammates.

Abilities

Passive: Combat Medic

Lifeline's most useful ability is the shield she projects in front of her when reviving teammates. While other players are stuck under fire when they revive and can be easily killed, Lifeline's shield saves her from the incoming damage. It can be the difference between losing a whole team and getting everyone back in the fight. Lifeline also heals herself and can revive teammates more quickly than other characters.

Tactical: D.O.C. Heal Drone

You can save teammates and yourself from spending their health items with your healing drone. Lifeline can drop the drone anywhere, and anyone standing close to it gets health restored--although how much health the drone can dish out is limited, and gets split between all the nearby players. You should also note that anyone, including opponents, can make use of a healing done, so be sure to be careful about where you summon it.

Ultimate: Care Package

Lifeline's ultimate ability allows her to call her own supply drop anywhere she wants. It's not quite as good as the supply drops that appear automatically on the map from time to time, but it's still pretty solid--Lifeline's care packages include defensive items, so you can get some sweet armor and healing items out of them, and even high-level weapon attachments.

Tips To Play

Lifeline's healing capabilities are great for supporting your squad, but they leave her vulnerable to attack from enemies, and mean she doesn't have any handy abilities to use against opponents or get herself out of trouble. Therefore, when you're playing as Lifeline, you should try to stay back from fights and out of harm's way as much as you can so that you're ready to help out teammates when they need you.

Going after revives will put you in the thick of the action, though, so it's best to be ready to defend yourself. Pick weapons that offer a lot of range, like the Longbow DMR or the G7 Scout, as well as shotguns or submachine guns for up-close encounters. Remember that while your job is to revive and heal people, getting killed while you do it is a great way to lose matches; shoot first, revive second.

No Caption Provided

Whether you're playing as Lifeline or you have one on your team, keep an eye out for Ultimate Accelerants. Lifeline has one of the longer Ultimate cooldown timers, and the quicker you can get care packages, the quicker you can grab high-tier defensive loot. It's also worth trying to get several of Lifeline's care packages in a single match to help kit everyone else out.

If you're set on gear and you still have a care package ultimate ready, try using it to distract enemies or confuse them. You can drop a package in one direction and run in the other, for instance, or call one and use it to draw out another squad for an ambush. We've also seen care packages kill enemy players by landing on them, and you use them to crowd tight areas or for cover--so get creative.

Lifeline's quick healing means you should try to stay as healthy as possible. If you can manage to heal up without leaving your teammates hanging during a fight, do it; your chances of winning a fight are always higher if you have a higher health pool. Just remember that, in a fight, helping your team keep shooting is usually better than falling back. Gaining or losing a numerical advantage usually determines which team wins a battle.

Drop health drones in cover positions so your teammates can fall back to them. Be careful where you leave them, though, because anyone can use them, including opponents.

Far Cry: New Dawn's Best Guns, Weapons, And Shovels

Far Cry: New Dawn continues series tradition, sporting a large arsenal of guns to cause havoc with. While many of these guns are ones you'll remember from last year's Far Cry 5, they've each been changed up to fit the new post-apocalyptic premise.

With so many options available, you're probably asking which weapons are worth purchasing. To help you out, we've gathered four of the best guns in each of the four ranks. These are more solid recommendations than guns to live by. After all, Far Cry is a game that welcomes different playstyles and personal creativity. However, what we've highlighted here are great to consider if you're unsure which guns to buy.

Check back in the next days for more Far Cry: New Dawn guides and features. We'll be covering more general tips, as well as showcase the game's coolest Easter eggs.

In our Far Cry: New Dawn review, GameSpot editor Edmond Tran said: "There's a lot of potential in the ideas seeded in New Dawn, but there isn't enough room for many of them to breathe, so none of them feel like they realize their full potential. Not the post-apocalypse theme, not the RPG mechanics, not the weapons, vehicles, plot, or characters. Regardless, progressing through the adventure is an enjoyable experience, especially once you get your superhuman powers, but this is largely because Far Cry 5's combat and progression models remain compelling enough to propel you forward. For its part, New Dawn is a palatable but unremarkable spin-off that feels like it could have achieved so much more."

But what are some of your favorite weapons in Far Cry: New Dawn? Let us know in the comments below.

Rusty SMG-11 (Rank I)

The moment you start Far Cry: New Dawn, you'll want to grab the Rusty SMG-11 to replace your starting pistol. It's always an upgrade to have something a little more...fully automatic.

Rusty AR-C (Rank I)

An assault rifle should always be a part of your repertoire, as you'll be needing one to get through most firefights. The Rusty AR-C is a solid all-around assault rifle that can effectively deal with the game's early threats.

Rusty RPG-7 (Rank I)

If you're not great at headshots, no amount of bullets is going to take out enemy vehicles in an instant. The Rusty RPG-7 is an essential weapon to have in your arsenal to deal with those junky Highwaymen cars before they have a chance to roll up on you.

Saw Launcher V.0 (Rank I)

The Saw Launcher weapon type is a bit of an acquired taste. We personally love it because the blades it fires can bounce around and hit multiple enemies. However, we understand that others personally prefer more direct, potentially explosive options. If you're on the fence about this makeshift weapon, we suggest at least picking up the Saw Launcher V.0 to see how it feels.

Makeshift AK-47 (Rank II)

The Makeshift weapons is where our opinion of "best" starts leaning towards the ridiculous territory. After all, Rank II is where the weapons start having special death animations that are well, not pretty--but in a good way. Take the Makeshift AK-47, for example, which has a literal screwdriver attached as its bayonet. You can only imagine the gruesome results.

Aside from that lovely perk, the higher damage, better handling, and increased magazine make it a great step up from the Rusty AR-C. The rate-of-fire may be a bit lower--but that screwdriver, though.

Makeshift RAT4 (Rank II)

The explosive force of the Makeshift RAT4 isn't much different from the Rusty RPG-7, but an increase in handling makes this the obvious next step up.

Makeshift Slingshot (Rank II)

The Makeshift Bow may seem a solid choice for stealthing about, but the Makeshift slingshot should be the one you get. Its statistics are identical, but it has the added perk of firing three different ammo types as opposed to the bow's two. It's a small difference, but if you like to sneak around, it helps to have options to dispatch foes.

Makeshift P226 (Rank II)

When your attempts at stealth go downhill, sometimes you need a gun that can respond quickly without alarming nearby guards. The Makeshift P226 can easily take down a target, sparing you from the time required to line up a shot with the Makeshift Slingshot.

Optimized AKMS (Rank III)

The Optimized AKMS is one of the best Rank III assault rifles you can get. Its high accuracy and handling makes it a fantastic upgrade from its predecessor. In addition, it can shoot armor-piercing rounds, which is a must against armored enemies. As to be expected, it has a pretty gruesome stabbing animation (that scissor attached isn't just for show).

Optimized Steel Bat (Rank III)

Melee weapons make for a great way to take down the baddies without expending hard-earned ammunition. The Optimized Steel Bat is a solid one to brandish, capable of easily downing enemies with a simple strike to their faces. You can also keep throwing an infinite supply of them at enemies for massive damage.

Optimized 1887 (Rank III)

We know what you'e thinking: "Did they pick this because it has a kitchen knife attached to it?" You're right, but the lever-action shotgun makes for a fun curiosity that packs a decent punch against enemies. If one shot doesn't do them in, one quick melee will undoubtedly finish the job. The ability to fire different ammunition types also helps make this a gun well worth having.

Optimized Recurve Bow (Rank III)

The Optimized Recurve Bow has a much higher accuracy rating, quick draw speed, and double the damage. It's your logical next step up from the Makeshift Slingshot.

Reality Shovel (Elite Rank)

The next iteration of Far Cry 5's Optimism Shovel is quite the upgrade. Titled the Reality Shove, this smiley face printed melee weapon is well worth using for its power and core gimmick. If you're a fan of throwing melee weapons, this is the one to have once you gain access to Elite Rank weapons.

"Blood Dragon" A.J.M.9 (Elite Rank)

Far Cry: Blood Dragon fans, rejoice! You can use Rex Colt's iconic pistol in Far Cry: New Dawn. While not a massive upgrade in damage from other pistols, its burst fire capability makes it a valuable asset in any firefight.

"Spraypaint And Pray" SPAS-12 (Elite Rank)

The "Spraypaint And Pray" SPAS-12 can make short work of enemies. Its firepower and ammo capacity makes it a great way clear through groups. In addition, the suppressor is a nice perk that makes it a worthwhile gun to use for predator play.

"Bear With Me" Saw Launcher V.3 (Elite Rank)

By the time you're able to acquire Elite Rank weapons, you'll be forced to decide between two different Saw Launchers: V.3 and V.T. The V.3 is simply a more powerful version of previous iterations, which is worthwhile if you've enjoyed the way that weapon functions. However, we recommend the Saw Launcher V.T's, as its boomerang capabilities allow you to preserve ammo.

Will Smith Reveals He Turned Down The Matrix, And Here's Why

Actor Will Smith was offered the role of Neo in The Matrix but he turned it down. The actor explained in a new video that the he was not sold on the Wachowskis' pitch, which supposedly involved promises of new camera technology and hard-to-grasp concepts that Smith didn't resonate with.

"There is a fine line in a pitch meeting between genius and what I experienced in the meeting," he said. Instead of doing The Matrix, Smith made Wild Wild West, and well, Smith acknowledged that he's "not proud of it." That is probably an understatement.

Smith had nothing but praise for Keanu Reeves, who played Neo, and Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus. They were both "perfect" in their career-defining roles, Smith said.

Smith said had he done The Matrix, the film would have featured Morpheus played by a white person. Val Kilmer was reportedly going to play Morpheus in this alternate timeline.

"I probably would have messed The Matrix up," Smith said. "I would have ruined it. So I did ya'll a favor."

This is a fascinating and frank statement from Smith, and it's nice to see him speak so openly and honestly about missing out on starring in a movie as popular as The Matrix. Of course, Smith didn't need The Matrix. He had already made Independence Day, Bad Boys, and Men In Black at that time, and he has gone on to star in many other films later in his career.

In the video, Smith also spoke briefly about how he originally did not want to be in Men In Black, because he had just come off Independence Day and didn't want to be type-casted as "the alien movie guy." Producer Steven Spielberg called him and convinced him to take the part.

It's always interesting to think about alternate casts for movies that go on to be huge hits. You may also recall that Nicolas Cage said no to playing Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings, while Al Pacino turned down the role of Han Solo for Star Wars: A New Hope.

Smith will be seen next as the Genie in Disney's new live-action take on Aladdin. He's playing both a human form of the Genie and a CG version that is very, very weird-looking.

Apex Legends Vs. Fortnite: What's Different And What's The Same

$
0
0

Apex Legends has stormed onto the battle royale scene in its first week, gathering some 25 million players into three-person squads, according to developer Respawn Entertainment. That's a lot of players--although not quite as many as the huge 200 million registered Fortnite players. The speed at which Apex Legends has gathered a massive community, however, has caused many to speculate that it might be the next big thing. And it seems that Epic Games has taken notice: the Fortnite developer made its Battle Pass for Season 8 free if you earn it by completing challenges. Each season's battle pass dishes out a bunch of free in-game items and normally runs about $10.

For those who aren't already dedicated Fortnite players or on the Apex Legends train, that leads to a question: which of the two should you play? Both games are free, making their money from selling in-game cosmetic items. And both use the battle royale formula, in which players compete against a huge number of competitors to be the last one standing. There are a lot of differences between Apex Legends and Fortnite, though, and knowing what they are can help make the decision of which is the game you should be playing.

Here's a complete breakdown of what Fortnite does, what Apex Legends does, and how they're similar and different, to help you decide.

Third Person Versus First Person

The most noticeable difference between Apex Legends and Fortnite is the perspective each uses. Apex Legends is a first-person shooter, and everything you do other than jumping into a match from the drop ship happens from the perspective of your player character. Meanwhile, Fortnite is a third-person game, so the camera is positioned behind the player character.

The difference in camera makes for a different experience in each game. In Apex Legends, you can only see what's in front of you. Third-person games give you a little more situational awareness thanks to the distance of the camera from the character, but it generally makes for reduced accuracy when aiming.

All Squads Versus 1-Against-100

Unlike just about every other battle royale game out there, you can't play Apex Legends alone. You can jump into the game to get matched up with other players, but the game only supports three-player teams right now, who face off in a game of 20 squads until only one remains. That's an important design choice, since Apex Legends is full of elements that bolster the emphasis on team strategy and tactics--we talked about a bunch of them in our review.

Fortnite supports squad play, but it also allows you to try to survive as a single player all on your own against as many as 99 others (and sometimes throws in crazy 50-vs.-50 modes). While the ability to play alone gives you more options for how you can engage with Fortnite, it also means the experience is a little less focused than Apex is.

Characters

Apex Legends' major addition to the battle royale formula is adding characters. At the start of each match, players pick one of the current roster of eight characters, each of whom has their own special abilities. Like in Overwatch and other character-based shooters, the special abilities of the characters are best used to complement each other, and a well-balanced team can often be key to victory.

Like in all battle royale games, players in Apex Legends start with nothing and have to find their weapons on the ground. That's true of Fortnite too, but Fortnite doesn't have any characters to add extra abilities to the mix. All the player characters in Fortnite are interchangeable; the only thing they start with is a pickaxe for cutting down trees, demolishing buildings, and smashing rocks for building materials. More on that shortly.

Building Stuff

The biggest thing that sets Fortnite apart from other games is its set of building mechanics. In Fortnite, it's as important that you cut down trees and break rocks to get building materials as that you find weapons. Having those materials allows you to construct things like walls and stairs that can help change the tide of battle. Building things can protect you from gunfire or help you escape bad situations, and can help you navigate the map.

There is no building in Apex Legends, for better or worse, although some character abilities can serve similar functions. Pathfinder's zip lines and grapple can help him reach high places and Gibraltar's shield can block bullets and grenades.

Destroyable Environments

Along with the ability to build in Fortnite is the ability to destroy. Most anything can be torn down, and that includes houses and buildings you'd otherwise use for cover, as well as the structures you create yourself. Firefights in Fortnite can get pretty hairy as structures are wrecked, and when players climb up on top of things like buildings or staircases, it's even possible to eliminate them by shooting the supports out from under them and watching them fall to their deaths.

By contrast, structures are indestructible in Apex Legends, even if they're just wood huts like those found in places such as Cascades or Bridges. The one exception is doors, which can be kicked open with a melee attack, or blown open with explosives, stunning people on the other side.

Movement And Verticality

One of the main things that Fortnite has that other battle royale games don't is a big sense of verticality. The ability to build things on the fly wherever you go leads to players constructing elaborate towers and staircases, using height to get over and around enemies and find advantageous positions. The fact that you can reach extreme heights in Fortnite is one of the things that sets it apart from other battle royale games.

Apex Legends also has a number of ways it makes its game vertical. The terrain throughout the map varies greatly in elevation, so it's very possible to take high ground and shoot down on enemies below. You can't build stuff, but there are a lot of options for getting up high. First, you can grab ledges and climb up lots of things in Apex Legends, and characters have the ability to scramble up vertical faces to reach heights that are about twice as tall as they are. Pathfinder, one of the game's current eight characters, can use his grapple hook and zipline launcher to reach high places and bring the rest of the team along with them. Fortnite has Apex Legends beat in how vertical the game can get, but Apex has smoother movement mechanics for getting around in general.

Weapons, Attachments, And Loot

Like most shooters, both Fortnite and Apex Legends have a smattering of different kinds of guns to use in various scenarios, ranging from pistols and shotguns to assault rifles and sniper rifles. Apex Legends' guns come from the Titanfall universe, and therefore tend to mix in sci-fi types like energy weapons, while Fortnite's are usually a little more traditional--but also throw in a few weird ones now and again, like the Boogie Bomb, which causes enemies afflicted by it to start dancing uncontrollably.

One of Apex Legends' better improvements on the battle royale formula is how it deals with inventory management. Guns all take a specific kind of ammo, but that ammo is color-coded so that when you find some in the world, you immediately know if it goes with the guns you're carrying. When you find weapon attachments, they're added to your guns automatically if they fit. If you trade a gun with something new you find on the ground, any appropriate attachments will be added to it, as well. Anything you find in the world that's worse than what you're currently carrying is marked as such.

Fortnite, meanwhile, doesn't include attachments, but instead color-codes its weapons to denote how good they are. Rarer, higher-tier guns have better attachments like scopes and suppressors, reload faster, or do more damage. For Apex Legends, guns are all the same until you add attachments that make them better, and some attachments are higher tier--and therefore more effective--than others.

Reviving And Respawning

Fortnite and Apex Legends both support squad play with teammates. In both games, taking a certain amount of damage causes you to be "knocked down," which means you're unable to fight. You can still move around in the downed state, but in most cases, you need to wait for a teammate to revive you (in Apex, you can find a piece of equipment that lets you revive yourself--but it's very rare). If you stay down for a certain amount of time or you sustain enough more damage while knocked down, you're eliminated from the match in both games.

In Apex Legends, being eliminated doesn't necessarily mean your match is over, though. Teammates can recover your "banner" from the loot you drop when you're knocked out of a match. If they manage to take it to one of several respawn beacons scattered around the map, they can bring you back into the game--albeit without any gear--and return your team to full strength. It's an Apex Legends feature that other battle royale games, including Fortnite, don't have.

Secrets, Seasons, And Strange Events

One of the things that really defines Fortnite is how much it has grown and changed as a live service game. Recently, there was an in-game performance by DJ Marshmello, and each season it includes new themes, weapons, skins, events, and challenges. There are weird things to discover hidden in Fortnite, and they're constantly changing. It's one of the things that continues to keep the game compelling.

It's early yet in Apex Legends, so it's unclear just what the game will look like as a continuing live service. We know Apex Legends is starting its first season in March, when it'll add new characters, weapons, and loot to the game. Respawn has mentioned that it intends to add in-game events, and we've already seen one hidden Easter egg pop up in the game. Players discovered 10 Loch Ness monster plush toys hidden in several areas around the King's Canyon map, and when they destroyed them all, it caused a huge version of Nessy to appear in the waters just off the shore of the Swamps area. That's a pretty chill Easter egg, all things considered, but it seems Respawn might have designs to do things similar to what Epic does in Fortnite when it comes to surprises, secrets, and new events.

The Verdict: Which Is Better?

Likely if you're reading this, you're hoping to find a decision point that can help you say definitively whether you should spend your time playing with the reigning battle royale champ in Fortnite, or switch to the upstart Apex Legends. The fact is, it's impossible to boil the differences and similarities between the two games down to simply saying one is better than the other. Apex Legends and Fortnite are likely to serve very different audiences. Fortnite has caught fire among younger players, it's true, but Epic is also pushing the game to become something more like a platform for various experiences than just a battle royale game--of which the Marshmello concert is a good example.

Meanwhile, Apex Legends is more for the traditional FPS crowd, leaning on tight shooting and movement mechanics. The addition of characters makes it more of a melding between Overwatch and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout mode than something more akin to the jumpy, flighty nature of Fortnite. Apex is about team strategy over Fortnite's twitch reaction. In a big way, the two games are serving totally different goals.

Choosing which one is right for you comes down to deciding what kind of experience you want. Is it goofier, jumpier, buildier, and generally more chaotic? You want Fortnite. Is it more tactical, more team-based, with a bigger focus on strategy and gunplay? Apex Legends is for you. But luckily, both games are free--which means you can try both.

The Frozen 2 Trailer Was A Massive Hit, Beats Incredibles 2 To Set New Record

Unsurprisingly, the first trailer for Disney's much-anticipated Frozen 2 was a huge hit. The trailer picked up 116.4 million viewers over its first day, which set a new 24-hour record for an animated movie.

The previous record-holder was The Incredibles 2, also from Disney, which tallied 113.6 million views. All of the numbers come from The Hollywood Reporter.

General Overview

Known as the Holographic Trickster, Mirage is one of the two unlockable characters in Apex Legends, the other being Caustic. He brings with him advanced holographic technology that can create false-duplicates for tactical purposes. On the surface, many of his skills appear a bit too situational and unorthodox, however, in keeping with the gameplay loop of a battle royale game, Mirage is the type of character that knows how to mess with his enemy's focus--which can mean all the difference in an intense fight.

With his slate of holographic skills, Mirage can disorient enemies and create additional pressure during fights. His primary tactical skill, known as Psyche Out, allows Mirage to create a holographic clone that runs ahead of him. At first glance, this double is indistinguishable from the real thing, which can cause other players to open fire. Mirage's decoy also display intelligence as well, and they act different depending on where they're deployed to. For instance, using one near a supply box will have the decoy perform an animation where they try to open it. Though many of these skills require certain circumstances to truly be effective, they are at their best when used in situations where you're uncertain of what lies ahead, or when you need to help your squad out by drawing fire away from enemies. However, it may take some time getting used to his abilities. With this in mind, here's a quick breakdown on how to his skills effectively.

Mirage's Abilities

Passive Skill: Encore - Automatically drop a decoy and cloak for 5 seconds when knocked down.

If all else fails and you get got, Mirage's passive skill Encore will kick in. Once you get knocked down, you'll instantly turn invisible and a decoy will drop in your place, who performs an overly dramatic death animation. This will buy you some time to crawl away to safety. However, the skill won't last long. If you're still out in the open and an enemy is nearby, then you're a prime target to get gunned down.

Tactical Skill: Psyche Out - Send out a holographic decoy to confuse the enemy.

Mirage's tactical ability Psyche Out is a skill that has a surprising number of uses. In addition to drawing enemy fire in certain hot spots, allowing you to flank or get a bead on where a foe is hiding out, it's also a great skill to use for playing mind games. For instance, during the initial jump, you can send out decoys to landing spots, confusing enemy players into the thinking they're more active than they actually are.

Ultimate Skill: Vanishing Act - Mirage deploys a team of decoys to distract enemies, while he cloaks.

The Ultimate ability Vanishing Act is essentially a combination of Mirage's Passive and Tactical skills. When activated, Mirage will turn invisible and let a team of holograms distract the enemy for him. The skill is a great way to confuse enemies, who will likely lose track of which Mirage is the real one. This can be especially handy during tough fights in crowded spaces. Some of the best uses of Vanishing Act come when used to bail on fights that your squad is outmatched for or when you need to get the jump on enemies during a fight. However, there is a certain clue that can help enemy players keep track of the real Mirage. When you turn invisible, you'll leave a silhouette and can take damage. If the enemy can stay focused on any sudden movement, then they can still hit you with their shots.

Tips To Play

Mirage's greatest strength in battle is his ability to disorient enemies and shake up a fight. With his holographic skills, he can easily disrupt a fight by using his holograms, which also gives him and his squad some time to breathe. Right at the beginning of the match, once you and your squad make the jump, he can pull off some interesting tricks on other teams. While dropping from the ship, Mirage can send out up to two different holograms on the field. This can cause other teams to panic while in mid-flight, changing their course in order to avoid any possible fights when they're on the ground.

Once you make it to the ground, Mirage is best used when keeping his skills close to the vest. Unlike other support characters, his abilities aren't handy with only his squad around. However, once things start to go down, when you inevitably cross paths with an enemy team, this is where Mirage can shine. If you get the sense that an enemy team is nearby, you can send out hologram to act as a probe, provoking any gunfire from enemies. While in the moment, it's difficult to tell what's the real Mirage or a hologram, and they'll likely open fire on-sight.

Just like every other character, Mirage can carry his weight in a fight with any weapon he can get his hands on. However, given his trickster oriented skill-set, you may be better off using weapons that focus on long-range, such as the Longbow or Triple Take sniper-rifles. Once you toss out a decoy, you'll likely see enemies fire at the hologram, which will either give you a clue as to where they are--or if you're lucky--an opening if they decide to come run out to investigate.

Mirage has a pretty peculiar skill-set, but in the hands of a patient, and decisive player, he can be an effective squadmate to have. Even before touching the battlefield, he can cause panic amongst the enemy teams, which can make for an impressive start for matches.
